Redesign enhances play at
Phantom Horse Golf Club
Long regarded as one of the most challenging resort courses
in the Valley, the award-winning Phantom Horse Golf Course
is undergoing a redesign as part of a $30 million capitalization
project at Pointe South Mountain Resort. Play on the updated
course will begin November 1, 2002; the course will remain
open during construction.
From adjustments in tee locations to the creation of one
of the Valley's only island greens, a series of changes will
improve the overall experience for Phantom Horse golfers.
The course will increase play to a par of 71 and measure just
over 6,300 yards.
"After listening to feedback from our members and resort
guests, we realized there were some areas we could enhance
to make our course even more enjoyable," said Bruce McNee,
an 18-year PGA member and director of golf at Pointe South
Mountain Resort. "We're making some changes that will
offer new challenges to golfers with varied levels of expertise,
while improving the course aesthetically."
Included in the renovation is the addition of a new golf pro
shop, more conveniently situated on the course. The new Phantom
Horse Golf Pro Shop will overlook the new island green on
Hole 18.
In addition, a chipping area with a practice bunker will
be built. This project will include a 7,000-square-foot regulation
green with a practice bunker and chipping area that will allow
for a variety of shots up to 40 yards. This new feature will
be located at the southeast corner of the practice area.
The following five holes will be modified in the redesign:
Hole #1 - The first hole will be reversed; the tee will
be on the hillside behind what is now the first green. The
lakes in front of the new pro shop will be expanded to allow
for the construction of an island green. This unique hole
will be renumbered to become Hole 18. (360 yards, Par 4)
Hole #2 - This hole (currently a par 3) becomes a dogleg
left par 4, and will be renumbered to become Hole 1. The
elevation of the road will be decreased to create an attractive
hole with lakes to the right of the landing area. (390 Yards,
Par 4)
Hole #3 - Tee boxes will be built into the side of the
slope to alleviate any traffic noise. The tee shot landing
area will be friendlier to the golfer with mounds that kick
the ball away from, rather than into, the lakes. The large
humps that are located 60 yards from the green will be leveled
and some bunkers added. The hole will become Hole 2. (596
Yards, Par 5)
Hole #4 - Although no significant changes will be made
to this hole, aesthetic improvements will be made to the
lakes in the landing area. The basic design remains the
same, and the hole will be renumbered to become Hole 3.
(362 Yards, Par 4)
Hole #18 - A new green near the bottom of the hill will
offer fantastic pin placements, and this will become Hole
17. (170 Yards, Par 3)
The 18-hole Phantom Horse Golf Course was awarded four stars
from Golf Digest magazine and offers golfers a challenging
and scenic game in the heart of the Sonoran desert. Pointe
South Mountain is the only resort in Arizona offering the
Skill Tec 3D golf trainer, alongside a video computer analysis
used to help improve swing, positioning and speed.
